ACNE – ITS CAUSES AND TREATMENT

Acne is a common skin condition faced by almost everyone at some point in their life, usually during the teenage years. It occurs when the hair follicles are blocked due to oil, dirt, dead skin cells, or bacteria. This leads to the formation of comedones or blackheads and whiteheads and pimple, while in severe cases may lead to the formation of nodules and cysts.

Acne is common during the adolescent period, while some people continue to have acne till adulthood. There are various aggravating factors for acne like excessive intake of oily or junk food, stress, use of improper cosmetic products, or use of oral or topical steroids. Hormonal imbalance mainly Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) is a major cause of acne during adult life.

Lifestyle modification in the form of regular exercise, yoga, meditation, intake of a healthy diet with plenty of water, etc can play an important role in preventing acne. Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided to prevent acne flareups. Apart from these, various treatments in the form of creams or oral medication and procedures are available for the treatment of acne. It is advisable to treat acne early to prevent the formation of acne scars. Acne should not be popped as these can learn to pigmented spots and scars.

ACNE TREATMENT

Treatment of acne depends on its severity. For mild acne, topical creams are usually sufficient. For moderate to severe cases, adult acne, and hormonal acne, oral medications are required. A full hormonal workup is done to rule out the underlying hormonal imbalance. Apart from these, various treatments are available for early treatment of acne, like come done extraction for removal of whiteheads and blackheads and chemical peeling which help in reducing acne and its marks. These procedures are painless and non-invasive and supplement the medications to get rid of acne.

The acne scars formed can be reduced by the use of different micro-needling devices like MNRF (micro-needling radiofrequency), dermapen, derma roller, or by the use of lasers like CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser.
