Melasma treatment

What is it?

Melasma is a chronic pigmentation disorder in which black and brown patches can be seen on the face. Melasma mainly targets cheeks, Forehead, Upper area of eyebrows and nose. Sometimes it can affect the neck and other areas of the body.

Melasma can not be treated with normal skin products as it is a deep pigmentation problem that involves multiple layers of the skin. When the skin comes in the contact of direct sunlight, Patches become darker.

Causes of Melasma are:

  • Sunlight
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Heredity
  • Menopause
  • Post Pregnancy
  • Stress
  • Contraceptive pills/birth control pills.
  • Use of Cosmetics
  • Dirt and Pollution

Dermatologists have developed several methods to provide a long-term solution for melasma. While melasma is still one of the most difficult types of pigmentation to treat due to its multi-factor cause and aetiology, There are some methods available which can cure melasma for a long period.

  • OTC Creams

Do not use any cream for Melasma without expert recommendation. There are various creams available for melasma which contain HYDROQUINONE and steroids. Use of such creams without any recommendation by a dermatologist can make skin thin and sensitive. Always make sure, know your skin type first and then under the supervision of dermatologists use OTC creams.

  • Chemical Peels and Lasers

Chemical peels and laser targets melanin pigmented areas. These melanin pigments originate Melasma. The laser can treat with deep pigmentation and helps to fight with melasma for the long term.

5) Cosmelan and Dermamelan treatment

Cosmelan is also a kind of Chemical peels which is used for extensive melasma.

Sunlight is not good for such skin. So we apply Cosmelan 1 in the evening and leave it for 7-8 hours. After that, the patient can wipe it off. Cosmelan 2 is used by the patient daily along with the moisturiser and sunscreen. It makes skin soft and smooth.
